Jaguar to Unveil New Diesel Engine at NY Auto Show

Jaguar Palm Beach, a leading Jaguar dealership in West Palm Beach, Florida, proudly announces that Jaguar is set to unveil its most efficient engine ever: the 2.2L diesel 4-cylinder unit, complete with an advanced 8-speed automatic gearbox from German supplier ZF. The new powertrain, which will be featured in a future XF production car, is slated to be introduced at this year’s New York auto show on April 22nd.

The new engine, which will debut in the U.K. in a prototype development vehicle, will come with a new 16-valve common-rail diesel installed in a longitudinal configuration, a Jaguar first. The featured water-cooled turbocharger, low-friction pistons, new injectors and crankshaft all lend the way to an improved Intelligent Stop/Start system, designed to promote more efficient operation.

Intelligent Stop/Start will help to significantly reduce the prolonged time spent in the shutdown and start-up phase occasionally experienced in these systems, with the new crankshaft sensor and fuel-rail pressure-holding system allowing the engine to regain power more rapidly via an innovative engine restart capability. “This is best demonstrated when approaching a busy roundabout – in situations where the driver briefly brings the vehicle to a stop only to move off again quickly,” Jaguar says. “In conventional systems, the engine needs to shut down completely before restarting again, leading to often frustrating delays.” The new Jaguar system is able to restart the engine while shifting down from as little as 400 rpm, which means it wouldn’t need to come to a complete stop, thereby restoring the drive and making for more efficient handling. With the inclusion of the stop/start function, Jaguar estimates that the overall fuel efficiency will see an estimated five to seven percent improvement.

The new engine is capable of turning out 187hp with 332 lbs. of torque. Also, equally appealing is the anticipated return of an impressive 52.3 mpg on the combined cycle! Achieving zero to 62 mph takes a mere 8.5 seconds before reaching a maximum speed of 140 mph. With such a powerful engine, you’d think it would be pretty noisy; however, to the contrary! Jaguar engineers emphasized sound reduction surrounding the engine and bulkhead and engaged active engine mounts to diminish vibration, resulting in a significantly quieter cabin.

Additionally, the production vehicle will come complete with an advanced 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. The new gearbox will allow the 2.2L engine optimal response, as well as effortless cruising on the highway, as the seventh and eighth ratios will effectively act as overdrive gears. This, Jaguar says, will ensure the ultimate balance between performance and efficiency.

2011 XJ Jaguar Redefined

From the ground up, the 2011 XJ is an all-new car, sharing with its earlier design little more than the feline leaper and model name. With a grille that tips its hat to the very first XJ—but without any of the cloying retro references that dilute the purity of some contemporary automobiles—the new XJ represents a daring departure from tradition.

The concept of a $100,000 luxury sedan constructed mostly of recycled materials was inconceivable when the first XJ was born. Stiffer and lighter than steel, the new XJ’s lightweight body and chassis are made of 50 percent recycled aluminum—the equivalent of about 12,000 soda cans. The body shell is at least 300 pounds lighter and considerably stronger than a comparable steel shell. The selective use of cast magnesium components for various subassemblies further reduces weight while enhancing strength.

Aimed squarely at the top-tier luxury cruisers, the XJ is available in standard- or long-wheelbase versions. The long variant, called the XJL, provides an additional five inches of length behind the B-pillar yet adds less than 200 pounds to the standard car’s weight. Jaguar anticipates that nearly half of all XJs sold will be the base-model XJL.

The XJ and XJL come in three different models—base, Supercharged, and Supersport—each with progressively greater power output and trim levels. The engine in all three is Jaguar’s aluminum 5-liter, dual-overhead cam V-8 with direct fuel-injection. This powerplant is mated to a quick, smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic transmission, solely operated by the JaguarDrive Selector. Responsive paddle shifters are standard on every model.

The naturally aspirated XJ and XJL, which run on 19-inch wheels, produce a respectable 385 hp and 380 ft lbs of torque. Performance-oriented types will opt for the Supercharged XJ or XJL, which add an Eton supercharger to the same 5-liter engine. For those who must have the top XJ or XJL in the lineup, the custom-order-only Supersport edition extracts even greater power from the supercharged powerplant: Its 510 hp and 461 ft lbs of torque achieve a zero-to-60 time of 4.7 seconds. All Supercharged and Supersport configurations feature distinctive 20-inch wheels designed for the XJ series.

Regardless of the model, the interior of the XJ will not disappoint Jaguar purists who respect tradition. The front seats adjust 20 ways and offer ventilation and massage functions, while the rear seats—especially in the long-wheelbase version—set the standard for comfort. Practical niceties that make life easier for city and highway driving include xenon headlamps with an intelligent high-beam system, LED rear lights, blind-spot monitoring in the rearview mirrors, a rear camera to aid in judging distances in reverse and water-repellent glass for greater visibility.

Unveiled at the American Le Mans Series' famed event - the Petit Le Mans, Jaguar XKR GT2 is all set to take on the championship by 2010.
